FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Opening reception: Friday, February 18, 6-8 pm

Friedrich Petzel Gallery is pleased to present Paul Myoda's fourth solo show at the gallery. There will be an opening on Friday February 18 from 6-8. The exhibition will be on view through March 25, 2000.

Dust includes seven sculptures with audio tracks comprising a selection of monologues from Myoda's sci-fi inspired narrative about reproductive experimentation in outer space. Each sculpture represents a character and/or planetoid which has been created by the enhancement of specific identifiable traits: strength, speed, endurance, beauty, sensuality, intellect, and immortality; all attributes telling of both humankind's aspiration and hubris.

The individual expressions are rendered through the compositions and sculptural details, as well as in the monologues that are gently whispered over the accompanying audio track. Beauty is evoked by the streamlined figure that rests on top of a white, iridescent form adorned with fractal sets. She begins, "I am so beautiful, for fun I roll in filth…" Strength is suggested by the solid geometric megaliths which emerge from the rough, uneven surface of its circular body. She begins, "I am so strong. For fun I wrestle with myself…" Myoda presents the beautiful and ideal while subtly engaging the darker side of human striving.

The sculptures are made from various treatments of the paper medium. The gallery floors are carpeted and the walls have been painted gray. Several works are suspended from the ceiling, while others rest on the floor or emerge from the walls. In essence, the gallery space has been transformed into a light stage encouraging the visitor to experience Dust's dramatic nature as a play.
