FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Opening reception: Saturday, May 11, 6-8 pm

Friedrich Petzel Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of new paintings by Nicola Tyson. This exhibition will be Tyson's fourth solo show at the Friedrich Petzel Gallery. There will be an opening reception on Saturday, May 11 from 6-8pm and the exhibition will continue through June 1.

This exhibition features five new works marking Tyson's return to oil paint and her continued interest in the presentation of the figure in various states of psychological and physical disarray. With this new body of work Tyson turns to an intimate subject matter, her family, in order to further explore the combined forces of the psyche and the physical body through the pliant properties of oil paint.

This new body of work is a noticeable difference from her approach to painting with acrylics. These new oil paintings allow Tyson to probe uninhibited emotions, thoughts and desires through the exploration of the formal concerns of figure painting. Tyson's work offers a jarring view of the human figure that is fantastical and compelling. Her work is an investigation of the unconscious through the arrangement and deconstruction of the human form, allowing for a transformation that suggests something beyond mere physical presence.

Nicola Tyson lives and works in New York. Her work has been exhibited internationally and the subject of a solo exhibition at the Kunsthalle Zurich. Her work is included in the collections of the Tate Gallery, London; Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; Museum of Modern Art, New York; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, California and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago.
